Since 1966 Salop Leisure has gone from a small showroom and offices at Meole Brace in Shrewsbury and were known as Salop Caravans. Since 2006 they occupy a brand new, state of the art, caravan showroom and service centre at Emstrey just outside Shrewsbury. Salop Leisure has just put plans forwards to turn the land next to its dealership into a premier site for touring caravans. Mark Bebb, managing director of the company, said he hoped the project would attract more people to the area.
He said: “We have got a small caravan park next door and we run parks in Mid Wales. We want to build an award-winning caravan park. It will be 120 pitches and it will employ somewhere around eight full-time staff and will cost £2 million. The development will also include building a reception block with warden’s accommodation as well as a new fishing pool.
Shrewsbury Town Council has given no objection to the scheme, and four people have put forward statements of support to the plans.
There have been five letters of objection to the scheme from neighbours and nearby residents concerned about noise, excess traffic and the potential to “spoil the rural view”. But Mr Bebb said he “hoped it would be a positive addition to the area”.
